Teetering on the Edge

This morning we took Scarlett to the Seven Sisters Sheep Centre near Birling Gap. It's a lovely place with lots of lambs born within the last week, and they also had a curly coated pig that had about 10 piglets that were only 5 days old. You can feed and pet the animals and they also have certain times where you can bottle feed the lambs. Scarlett's a bit young to do that, but we can always take her again when she's a bit older.

Afterwards Rachel wanted to go and see Beachy Head so we stopped at Birling Gap on the way to show them the recent cliff collapse which has left these cottages teetering on the edge. They're old Coastguard Cottages, and due to the storms in February, 3 metres of the cliff collapsed into the sea which is apparently equivalent to 7 years' erosion. The end cottage is now only 6 inches from edge and has to be demolished, making it the third cottage in 20 years to be knocked down - the first was in 1994 and the second in the early 2000's. An engineer from the local council says that the adjoining cottage will only have up to 10 years before it succumbs to erosion. There's also a restaurant opposite the cottages which has also just lost it's sun lounge and ice cream parlour, so it's future isn't looking very promising!

Fortunately we managed to dodge the showers today, we had all four seasons including a very heavy hailstorm - it's hard to believe it was 18 degrees this time last week!

We came home for a Sunday roast and Rachel, Scott and Scarlett have just left. They were going to go home tomorrow, but have decided it would be easier to drive tonight like they did when they came. So Scarlett had her bath and bottle and was ready for bed, so hopefully she'll sleep in the car again. We've had a lovely weekend, but as usual it's gone too quickly!

It was hard to decide what to blip today as I had so many cute baby animal shots, but we all decided I should blip this piece of history, and you can see Rachel's blip at the Sheep Centre here.
