Amber Museum

The state of Chiapas is known for amber. According to the brochure: amber is a fossilized plant resin, around 25 to 30 million years old, and comes from a tree called Guapinol ( Hymenaea courbaril) The mines are in mountainous, difficult to reach areas, and is done entirely by hand under the dim light of a candle.
The most antique piece of amber that was actually worked by people (made into jewelry) was discovered in Hannover, Germany, and dates from more than 30,000 years ago.
Of course there is much imitation amber sold on the streets, and a video described ways to tell the real from the false.
