Moss
Brachythecium rutabulum.
Rough stalked feather moss. There are over 600 species of moss in the UK. I had to ask my botanist sister for help with this one and even she needed a microscope! Apparently this is one of our more common mosses.
Moss does not have roots - it likes to grow in damp places as it absorbs water from the air. People living around the artic circle have traditionally used moss as bedding and to insulate boots or mittens. It has even been used as sanitary protection... Bit damp!
