Oh Joy Oh Rapture!!
Well Team Oz made the trip home from Kiama to the Blue Mountains this afternoon and I had to admit I was feeling quite sad. I really felt that we may have seen the last of our beautiful Gang Gang Cockatoos - who have made Wombat Hollow their watering hole for the past couple of weeks. It was a strange feeling leaving the property on Tuesday, you can become quite attached to these amazing birds. They're so shy but had become quite trusting of us. Fortunately we had lots of rain while I was away and the bird baths still had water in them. Perhaps, just perhaps they would still be around.
As the sun was setting I almost cried with joy, there they were! I could hear the wonderful sound of a creaking door in the tree outside the living room. It wasn't long before I was rushing around like a mad thing trying to capture an image that I could share with you.
The other day, just prior to leaving home for our short trip south, I was cleaning the Billabong when four Gang Gangs flew onto branches just above my head. I quietly kept going about my work and they all sat and watched me for nearly half an hour. It was a thrill when they all decided that I was okay and the whole Team Gang Gang swooped down to drink from the Bird Bath. I didn't want to spoil the moment and decided this was one time when I would not rush in to find the camera. It was a magic moment!
We just feel so privileged to have shared our home with them over the past couple of weeks. I know the time will come and probably fairly soon when they will fly away to a warmer climate over winter. I think they know now that there will always be a big welcome mat out for them at Wombat Hollow.
