Aquamarine/Nanna K's Day

By NannaK

Ring in the New

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow;
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Etc

Alfred Lord Tennyson

I thought of this poem in the middle of the night when the wind was howling and I heard this bell ringing. (all night and most of the day!). We have just hung it up from an Arbutus tree in our “backyard” - it’s a lovely anniversary gift form H’s brother (blipper stationmaster) and sister in law and we thought it would be great up here. It’s a beautiful bronze cast windbell from Arcosanti, an urban experimental community from the 70’s , the work of Architect Paolo Soleri who had this theory of environmentally compact and correct design (archology = architexture + ecology.) We’ve visited this odd place in the desert in Arizona - it’s kind of a cult thing that is about 5% complete now and the founder has now grown old and retired. Not sure it will ever be finished. The bronze and ceramic bells are their income. I do like the sound - -it’s heavy enough that it won't ring unless there is a big wind. (like today! here with flapper swinging...) and that is their purpose - to tell there is wind…. Thanks T and MA!!!

And we just saw news photos from the west coast of the UK of the terrible storms there as well as the east coast of the US so I’m NOT complaining!

Otherwise a slow day, :-) walk, new year visit with our neighbor across the bay, and another movie tonight: Renoir.

EDIT: finally found just a bit of the sound of these particular bells in a 1:35 min video. Bells - HERE

I also see that Soleri died last year - Here is a good article about the place...
