Podiceps nigricollis

An Eared Grebe at the North Spit Jetty. The sea was angrier than usual so we didn't make it out to the end, but all was well as my second-ever Red-Necked Grebe turned up, along with a pile of Western and Horned Grebes as well. Podicipediformes aplenty!

The Eared Grebe is called the Black-Necked Grebe in other parts of the world. This one's in nonbreeding plumage, with just the faintest tinge of orange lingering from its summer finest.
