HMS Scotsman,HMS Resolution
A number of photographs have been making their way to the Weegie household from Grandpa S's house. Here are a few.
Grandpa S served on a number of different submarines out of Barrow-in-Furness, Thurso amongst many other places at home and abroad. A lot of Mr S's early school life revolved around moving and resettling.
It's a strange dilemma. I don't agree with Nuclear Submarines and Ballistic missiles, but the commitment and contribution that he made to naval history is admirable. This is the HMS Scotsman (an experimental submarine), and the first Polaris submarine HMS Resolution. taken in 1967.
Ironically, at this age he probably didn't realise his career choice would cause his terminal illness aged 79.
In retrospect it's easy to cast judgement on people who chose to serve on nuclear submarines, but as Mr S explained, his dad didn't think of the consequences, he wanted to travel the world - he thought he was invincible. For us, it's important that we show the girls these photos - and give a small insight to their grandfather's life. They can make their own moral decisions when they are older.
