A Relic From The Past
This impressive piece of old machinery is a sugar mill that still rests on the grounds of the old Jalousie Plantation (now Sugar Beach Resort) in Saint Lucia. When I asked about it, I was told the island used to grow a great deal of sugar cane, but then the canes became diseased, and production slowed and eventually stopped all together.
The name Mirrlees, Tait & Watson is still clearly visible on the bottom of the mill. I looked them up on the internet, and discovered that this company, based in Glasgow, Scotland, manufactured sugar machinery under this name between 1868 and 1882.
