Mystery Fowl

Okay, I need a little help here. My "Birds of the Puget Sound Region" has one all black duck listed, the Black Scoter, Melanitta americana, but it doesn't look quite like this fellow. The shape of the bill is different I think. So, if there's a blipper out there who is more duck savvy than my book or I am, let me know. If all else fails, I'll send an inquiry to our local bird expert, Joe. I've been on a couple of bird walks with him in the recent past and he has an envious and encyclopedic knowledge of these critters. I'm glad somebody does.

Update: Now I know, thanks to LocalFoodLover and Gatekeeper that it's an American Coot, Fulica Americana. Live and learn!
