Hopewell Rocks
I was very nearly extremely disappointed today. We got up and drove from St. John through Fundy National Park to Hopewell Rocks. Going to look at tides and rocks. Yup...tides and rocks.
We took our time with a few stops in the Park and along the beach. After stopping at the visitor's center we stopped at the Alma beach as 'the best place to view the tides'. Hmmmm, there are some rocks, and a beach...are you sure we are in the right place?
When we were nearly to Hopewell Rocks (a several hour drive, mind you) Andy sees a small sign tacked into the corner of the direction signs...'closed for the season'. Oh, hell no! Sure enough, the gates were closed and the chains were across the access to the beach. Just before my minor meltdown, we spotted a ranger near the gate. 'Sure, duck right under, just mind the tides as no one will tell you when to leave. Have fun!'
Wait, did I hear what I thought I heard? We can duck the fence, we just need to look out for ourselves? The US would never let us do that!
I'm very glad we were able to get in, it was fantastic! We were still a couple hours away from low tides, and the high tide marks were feet above our heads. Spectacular! Nature can be really awe inspiring.
On the way back we decided to swing back by Alma beach...Andy wanted to check out one of the old boats again...and why not? We got there, crossed the road...and...WOAH. The water was nearly a mile out from where it had been this morning. Complete with the river flowing through the beach, and all the 'docked' boats now lying on their sides on the beach a long way from water.
