With a large percentage of the tourists departed, it was considered safe for us to venture forth into town by way of the Grassmarket and Victoria Street, thus avoiding the hordes in Forrest Road anxious, it seems, to rub the nose of Greyfriars Bobby in order to wish a wish, thereby giving it a different colour to the rest of him, and the gaggle of foreign students blipping the Elephant House where a notice in the window tells them that this is yet another cafe in which the Harry Potter books were written.

In town, it is hard to see the winter clothes on sale when people are still in
T-shirts and short sleeves, but the leaves on the trees are beginning to turn and frost is expected in the north at the end of the week; better make the most of it while we can.
