Big Feet Floored
I am always on the look out for a new species of bird to blip and Mrs Jenny Wren has been on the to-do list for a long time. There have been plenty of sightings, but usually she is in a hedgerow or amongst undergrowth flitting from one perch to another. By the time the camera is out and focussed she has gone or, with being so wee, is at a distance where a decent blip is impossible.
Today, she appeared unexpectedly clinging to the wall of our outdoor basement area, having clearly collided with the glass baluster that surrounds it. After a few birds struck the glass last Summer, we covered it with an opaque film, which we thought had done the trick with no collisions this year until now. By the time I got the camera out she had flown onto the edge of the wall where she sat for a few minutes getting her breath back. Glad to say she soon flew off into nearby bushes having hopefully recovered from her ordeal.
On reviewing the shots I was really taken with the size of her feet, which look to be almost half the size of her body! I am thinking this is probably a juvenile wren from a family I first saw a few months ago.
The basement area is proving to be something of a wildlife trap as this Mole and Hedgehog can confirm!
