Flamingos!
Managed to leave home just after midday; we always plan to leave early, but neither of us had packed, and could hardly bring myself to do it; so hard to think what you need for cold weather. And where are those things anyway??
Got to Aeromar, which feels like coming home, and decided to forgo a nap and walk across the bridge and along the Ria while the tide was low.
Saw hundreds of fiddler crabs, and then birds - herons, spoonbills, egrets, and other water birds - we're neither of us good at birds. Decided to walk out on the path north along the Ria, and then right onto the salt flats... loads of flamingos, some flying, others walking along fishing, hard to see properly because the sun was so bright. Mike saw a kingfisher zooming low over the water. And always aeroplanes just overhead.
Then, as the sun went lower, got closer and closer to a couple of fishing flamingos - I've never been so close to them before. Not pink, though, and the water deep enough to cover their legs, but glorious in the golden sunlight.
Two extras: prettier in pink, and an easy to identify flying creature.
Gratefuls:
- excited to get close to so many flamingos, and all the other beauty as well
- Mike getting us safely here to Faro
- a day now to relax before we fly
