Flamister

A fine calm but cloudy morning, rain at lunchtime, then cleared into a warm sunny afternoon.  A cloudy, breezy evening.

After a great night out last night, I paid for it this morning with a stinking hangover.  I finally got out walkies with Sammy.  Popped by big Brian and Madeline, they're away on the ferry south tonight.  Met mam and Jonny for a hike this afternoon.  A quiet evening at home, early to bed tonight.

A great day to get out in the hills and clear the head, although it was cloudy up in the hills.  We took advantage of the windfarm roads again, exploring a new hill and views, with an aim to reach an abandoned remote croft house.  I've been meaning to come here for years, and was not disappointed.  Sadly the house has fallen in, but the outbuildings still have roofs.  Doing a bit of digging, the oldest records I can find are Goudie family staying here in 1794.  Jessie Saxby also mentions the folk from here in her book 'Shetland Traditional Lore', including music and trows.  They were know locally for music, the fiddlers of Flamister.  Sadly been abandoned, possibly in the 1960s or 70s, later used as a lamb house, before falling into disrepair.  Some lovely old furniture still surviving in the old byre, but the people long gone.  The croft of Flamister, Dud of Flamister, South Nesting.
