Concert in St Nicholas Church
Today we did a 6.5 hour guided tour of Prague which entailed walking over the Charles Bridge, the founding stone laid at 5.31 on 9 July 1357 as the most auspicious time astronomically. We heard about St John with the five stars who was martyred and thrown off the bridge. We walked into the lesser town and caught a tram to the top near the palace and then wandered through the beautiful gardens, admired St Vitas Cathedral, first extra, inspected the guard (second extra), walked through the palace grounds, down the hill into the Jewish quarter, back to the astronomical clock for the 2 pm chiming, lunch, a walk past the mayor's office, the Jesuit university back to the bridge where we finished off with a boat trip along the Vltava river where the tour ended at approximately 4.30. We hobbled back to St Nicholas Church and bought our tickets for a concert with Vivaldi's four seasons, some Bach, Handel, Mozart and Dvork pieces. It was the absolute highlight of the day for me. The players used authentic instruments and the principal violinist was excellent. He is standing in the main. Not the best picture but it will always be my favourite thing so far in Prague. There are concerts most nights in most of the big churches in Prague. This one cost about AU$32 and we had front row seats. Sigh....
