This might seem a strange photo but I found it fascinating how an old tower built in 1218 is being propped up on stilts while the site is being developed for a new 35 storey building. Also a chapel crypt built in 1200 is being preserved. The view is taken from The Garden on top of a 17 storey building. There is little comparison with the larger Sky Garden which is twice as high and blipped a year ago but is still well worth a visit. Some of the views include the skyscrapers colloquially known as “The Walkie talkie, The Cheesegrater, The Gherkin and across the river are The Shard and The Onion. The Tower of London and Tower Bridge (which we had earlier seen raising its deck to allow a boat to pass below) can be seen and further down the river are the towers at Canary Wharf. When the new development is completed with its 35 storeys some of the views from The Garden will unfortunately be obstructed. However the old chapel tower will be retained as a focal point within the landscaping and the public will have access to it and the crypt.
Meanwhile we will join the hordes who could not travel to Edinburgh today and were very fortunate to be able to extend our stay by another night. The bonus was that we had an extra day holiday and were able to see more of our daughter and family before they drove home this afternoon.
