A tree that can withstand atmospheric pollution is the London plane which is the most common tree in central London. Each year it discards its bark so keeping a healthy trunk although pollution is not such a problem as it once was when factories and home fires belted out smoke. An unusually tall tree is the Cheapside Plane which is believed possibly to be almost 300 years old and the oldest tree in the City of London. In order to protect it the old building adjacent is not allowed to be more than one storey high which is very unusual among numerous modern very tall buildings. Mail sometimes in the past was addressed referring to the proximity to the tree instead of the street number. It has survived years of the Blitz, demolition round about and storms. While the latest storm is threatening travel tomorrow it will hardly damage the famous Cheapside Plane, but the threat of fallen trees blocking roads and railways, has caused trains into Scotland to be cancelled. So we have a problem as we have no idea what we will do tomorrow when we should be going home.
