An Old Man
The famous Old Man of Hoy rising from the Atlantic. Hardly original but a dramatic sight. J and I slept reasonably in Scrabster last night. We were up early and aboard the MV Hamnavoe for the 08:45 crossing to Stromness. Had time for a coffee and a wander before catching the bus to Kirkwall for the 13:00 boat to Westray. On both crossings we sat on deck the whole time. Until, on the Westray boat, we were invited into the captain's part of things where we watched Rapness Pier approach from the very front through the huge windows. Exciting!
The Community Bus was waiting to take us to Pierowall and we checked into the hostel. It's lovely! So comfortable and well equipped. We have a room each and mine is huge.
It's a glorious day and a marvellous introduction to the Queen of the Isles. J has never before been to Westray. We walked to the shops and bought a few provisions to eat tonight. The hotel is packed out and couldn't take us but that's fine. We are the only hostel guests it seems. I'm very surprised.
We are about to have a cup of tea and another stretch of the legs before we eat. J is keen to swim but the tide is against us her. Phew!
I know I'm going to be a bad blip friend for the next few days. Apologies.
