In search of my roots
As a teetotaller, I have mixed feelings learning that my grandfather, Walter Rumsey, ran a successful family brewery business in Crickhowell.
Now my brother has his ledger a complete record of his business activities, with details of all the farms he bought barley from and how much he paid .
The mystery is why he gave it up to move with his family to a remote farm high up on the Sugar Loaf Mountain.
He died long before I was born and the family stories about him are few except that he was a great reader and loved making things .He did build one of the first radios and he was so pleased with it he took it to show a neighbouring farmer who was impressed to hear human voices come out of a box and asked:
“ Can you ask it questions?”.
“No, but one day you will,” replied Walter Rumsey.
(Did he foresee Alexa?)
