LOOKING FOR LUNCH

I was at the track today for Indy Car Weekend.  As Indy Cars were zipping past me I saw this Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) riding the thermals and scanning the landscape for any gophers...aka 13-lined Ground Squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) or Chipmunks (Tamias striatus) that happened to be unwary.

This is one or our resident Red-tails and he/she makes a pretty good living thinning out the rodent population.  On more than one occasion I have seen them strike and fly off with a foot full of lunch.
