Something Wicked (This Way Comes)
Blip is going to be a bit out of sync for a couple of days as I catch up on some evening activities.
Ordinarily, I would have been onstage last night, rather than sitting in the audience. But though I could have attended all rehearsals for the play - and most of the performances - not being available for the last night due to a prior commitment was a bit of a deal breaker!
With a cast of BATS regulars, including fellow blipper dunkyc in the lead role, I knew we were in for a cracking show, and thus it proved to be. The play is about a small amateur dramatic society’s attempts to put on a production of “Macbeth” - referred to in the theatre world as “The Scottish Play” due to various superstitions about not saying the name in order to avoid bad luck and possible calamities. The main character - Michael - is obsessed with putting this play on, although it ultimately comes at a great personal cost.
There were a lot of laugh out loud moments - especially for those of us used to the world of amateur theatre - but quite a bit of pathos as well as Michael’s world unravels around him. All very well acted by the talented cast. It was nice to see a couple of new faces in some of the minor roles as well. The staging - in line with Michael’s vision for his play - was mainly “black box” and clever lighting, but with some rather snazzy trucks that could be pushed in from the wings for the more “domestic” scenes.
The audience was not large, but there was plenty of enthusiastic applause at the end.
It was nice to catch up with everyone after the show, and I wish them success with the final performance tonight.
I’m heading off to North Wales now for our evening’s entertainment…
