Peace Dove Project
I don't know if there was any thunder during the night, I didn't hear it if there was, but it was drizzling this morning when we decided to go up to this project on display at Denholme Shared Church, one of our United Benefice churches.
Inspired by Peter Parker's Peace Doves display that toured the country's cathedrals last year. We saw it at Durham Cathedral last August but the lady we spoke to this morning had seen them at Lincoln Cathedral in October. She applied for a grant from Bradford 25 City Of Culture and has involvement from all the community, including youth groups as well as the church.
Most of the doves are made from paper plates but there are knitted ones in the windows and in the kitchen, where they were serving tea and cake, there was a board asking what peace means which, apart from responses, was adorned with doves created using tatting. I particularly liked these - extra -as well as the main installation (blip) which was tinted with pink light. There are some outside too at the entrance and in the rather nice Community Garden at the rear of the church.
Sadly they haven't had a lot of visitors. It's open on Saturdays till the end of June from 10.00am till 3.00pm and then Sundays 12.00 till 3.00.
There are four churches in our benefice and on the last Sunday of the month we are having a united service for all four churches and Churches Together (other denominations in our parish). That service will also be the last one for our Rector Richard who is moving on. It will be packed so I think everyone is probably waiting to see them then. It was nice to see them in a quiet church but it is a shame for the ladies on duty and those who have put in all the work. The theme of peace is definitely something our world needs at the moment!
I've added more photos to my Bradford 25 Summer Art Flickr Album here if you are interested.
