The Leintwardine Misericords #1
My blip today is a collage of the modern misericords ('mercy' seats) in St Mary Magdalene church Leintwardine. Carved by local wood sculptor Andrew Pearson they follow the same form as the medieval misericords opposite them in the choir stalls but have a satirical twist. Top left a music misericord with the church choir, top right the local priest who also happened to be a car-mechanic and cider-maker. Bottom left features the master butcher who was also a keen cricketer and bottom right celebrates the landlady of the village parlour pub. Apparently a fifth misericord has been commissioned. Next time I'm passing I will photograph the medieval ones opposite, although they were much damaged by the iconoclasts.
