Pamplona
After an excellent night’s sleep, we woke up to find that the temperature had dropped from 32° to 17° overnight and it was chucking it down! We made the most of our bountiful breakfast, before setting off on the road again. Our next stop was Pamplona, a city Mr P stopped off at during his Camino last year, but my first visit. It’s famous for the running of the bulls event during the San Fermin Festival and for its links with Ernest Hemingway. He was a frequent visitor and set one of his books in the city. Mr P and I had pinchos (Basque tapas) in his favourite café (Iruña) in the main square, a lovely art deco building. In the afternoon, we dodged some heavy showers and drove to our hotel in Liendo (a converted 15th century tower). Most of the other guests are pilgrims on the Camino del Norte. The village is only about half an hour’s drive to our ferry tomorrow. It’s also close to Laredo, where Mr P’s family had a flat and so our friend Juanma joined us for drinks and tapas on our last night in Spain.
