Summer Fruit

I picked more strawberries at the allotment today and placed them in a bowl on the kitchen table so we could enjoy seeing their vibrant red colour as well as eating them. It feels early to be picking strawberries. I imagine the warm spring has spurred them into ripening. Most importantly they are sweet and full of flavour.

Otherwise at the allotment I netted the black and red currant bushes, the strawberries and gooseberries. It’s quite a tricky affair trying to find the right size and shape of netting for each fruit bed and securing it down so there are no gaps for inquisitive birds to sneak through.

This afternoon I caught up on the phone with my sister. Unfortunately the half term camping trip to north Wales taken by my nephew and brother-in-law was brought to an abrupt end by high winds and heavy rain. Apparently it took several adults to hold the tent down whilst my nephew ran inside to remove the tent’s contents. They plan to return in July to do the hill walking they didn’t manage this time!
