Life is a Challenge!

WELL DONE, ZACH!

Our young friend from Church, Zach, was due to come over on Friday, but his Mum messaged to say he had football practice, so they couldn’t make it.  However, she said that her husband, Matt, could bring Zach as he was looking after him this week while Mum worked, so today was the day.

While Matt and Mr. HCB sat chatting, it wasn’t warm enough to go outside, and in fact, it was raining.   I know that disappointed Zach a little because he loves to wash the marbles in our butterfly stopping place, so I asked Zach if he knew how to play Dominoes.  He wasn’t sure, but when I asked Matt he said he didn’t think so either, but I decided to try anyway - always good to try a new game.

We started with the Double Six Dominoes, and Zach soon picked that up - in fact, he beat me by 7-1!

After beating me by 5 games, I asked Zach if he would like to see some other Dominoes and he was up for that.  Both sets belonged to my Mum, who used to love a game of Dominoes and she always beat me, so this was nothing new!  When we took the large Double Nine set out of the box, immediately Zach knew the numbers on them, which was amazing for a child who had never seen these before.  Interestingly, when I said how good he was with numbers, he looked at me and said “Well, I do phonics at school!”  It took me back to when our sons were small when we played lots of games with them.  Mind you, they always seemed to pick things up very quickly too, and the same happened today, so I was beaten hollow by Zach.  Ah well, a 79 year old against a very bright 5 year old - guess I didn't really stand a chance!

You can see Zach in my collage - at the top left with the smaller set of Dominoes and in the main photograph you can see the very long line we made with the other Double Nine set and again he won this game.  They have now gone home and I have let him borrow the small set, so he can play with them this afternoon - both Mum and Dad are working from home today, so they may find that Zach will play happily on his own!  I have explained that he is just borrowing the set and when something is borrowed it is given back, so he does understand that.  We are over at their house for Home Group this evening, so we will get the set back then.

They are such a lovely family and we are pleased that Zach enjoys coming to see us - and of course, it brings back lovely memories for us of when our boys were much younger.  I have promised the next time they come, if the weather is right, he can wash the marbles!

Mr. HCB was out in the garden by 7.30 this morning - and a good job too, because it is still raining now  so he wouldn’t be able to do much out there, but we aren’t unhappy about that and hopefully, it will do the plants a lot of good.
