Mono Monday: Weird and Wonderful

The theme for Mono Monday from GillyH is 'weird and wonderful'.  Well this is certainly weird; whether it's wonderful or not is another matter.  It's a tea towel, with a design which is a play on the famous painting by Grant Wood, 'American Gothic'.

It was a bit of a silly stocking filler present at Christmas but there was a story behind it.  When we went to India last October we were part of a group on an organised tour.  Those who follow me may remember that we missed the first day of the holiday due to a medical issue so we only caught up with the group on the second day.  Apparently there had been another couple who it was thought were due to be part of the group but who seem to have decided they wanted to be on their own, so rearranged with the tour operator (no doubt at great expense) to travel in a car with their own driver.  Of course, as they were doing the same itinerary we kept on bumping into them at some of the sights and they were staying in the same hotels as us.

They were friendly enough but kept themselves to themselves.  The thing is, they looked just like the couple in the painting, him in particular, so they came to be referred to in our group as 'American Gothic'.  Consequently, when I spotted this tea towel before Christmas I couldn't resist getting it.
