Exploring Newent
Wednesday
The morning was grey with showers, but it looked like the afternoon would be better, so we stayed in for the morning, but in the afternoon went for a walk round the lake at the nearby market town of Newent. I was pleased to capture a pair of Common mergansers (only one shown in my collage) and the beautiful little English robin, who posed quite nicely for me, affording me several shots. There were also a couple of lovely wood carvings along the way, carved from tree stumps. Having walked around the lake, we walked into town to the old stilted market house and the parish church, which unfortunately wasn’t open to view the inside. On the way back to Janet’s we stopped by the village of Hartpury, where my sister had previously lived, with its tithe barn, one of the largest in England, and 12th century parish church, which was open for visitors. Behind the church in the churchyard you can find an unusual piece of architecture from a bygone age, a 19th century bee shelter. The ornate shelter has 28:stone niches, or boles, under a neoclassical stone roof topped by ball finials. (See extra collage)
In the evening, the three of us played a couple of games of Scrabble, with Janet beating us once again!
