Scotland - from Glasgow to Isle of Skye
It has been a long day but a good day. After a surprisingly good nights sleep at the Premier Inn next to Glasgow Airport - the room was spotless with a very modern and well appointed bathroom and very comfortable - we set off at 5.30am this morning and after a full day we only got to our accommodation on the Isle of Skye at 5.30pm, and we were busy all day. There are three of us on a workshop with Guy Edwardes, me and two other men who seem very nice.
We did not stop at the much favoured photography locations of Rannoch Moor, Glencoe or Fort William as we were heading further north in the hope of some mist. We briefly stopped at the only place that was open very early this morning to get teas /coffees, which was Greggs - the men got sausage rolls but I don’t eat them so decided to hold out for our planned late brunch.
There was no mist but some lovely soft light in Glen Garry which was our first stop. Here is a view across Loch Garry with delicate and subtle colours just after sunrise. It was a difficult location to access as we walked down a steep bank that had rocks and icy mud, all of us in our wellies which are not the best for difficult hikes.
We stopped at various places along the way as we drove towards the Isle of Skye. We ended up missing breakfast but stopped at the cafe at Eilean Donan castle for lunch. After lunch we walked up the steep hill to get a view of the castle from higher up. It was a difficult climb in slippery conditions, wearing wellies which don't have much grip and all the while carrying my heavy camera bag on my back. We ended up doing about 13,000 steps today in wellies with my camera bag on my back so I felt tired by the end of the day.
When we got to Skye we took photos of the bridge and then went to photograph a derelict boat and some fishing boats. We finally got to our accommodation at 5.30pm. We are staying in a very nice self catering cottage near Broadford which lies on the water's edge with amazing views across the sea. I have my own comfortable en-suite bedroom. We dropped our bags and then went grocery shopping at the nearby Co-Op. Tonight Guy did not cook but we went out for supper. The choice was very limited, most restaurants and cafes are closed at this time of year and we had the choice of one cafe where I had a rather terrible very mediocre GF pizza.
Now I must get to bed as tomorrow is another 5.00 wake up to go hike up the Quiraing before sunrise.
