Delting Memorial

After a short walk first thing this morning around the Loch of Voe in brilliant sunshine we headed up to Mossbank to see the Delting Memorial. This commemorates the loss of four fishing boats and 22 men (with 66 dependents) in December 1900. It devastated the local community as did the Gloup Disaster a few years before.

The list of men shows that the youngest was 16 and the oldest 75. Successive generations of some families were wiped and the loss sustained by the Nicolson family is particularly notable.

We concluded our time on Shetland with lunch at the Scalloway Hotel and now we are whiling a bit of time away at the Knab before we go and get the boat.

We'll be back! Probably not next year, but soon.
