Izamal
Emily and I drove to the City of Izamal today - about a 90 minute drive from her house. It’s a fascinating city with quite an incredible Mayan and Spanish Colonial history - read more here if you’re inclined: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izamal
It’s also know as the “Yellow City” since many of the buildings in the city are painted yellow. It’s also the site of some significant Mayan ruins, with a pyramid evident in the city center.
We had an incredible lunch at a wonderful Mayan restaurant https://restaurantekinich.com/
We each had carne Asada a la Yucatena
Pork steak marinated with achiote and sour orange, grilled over firewood, served with pickled onions, chiltomate (firewood roasted tomato sauce) and strained beans.
