This bed has caused trouble…

Well it’s not the bed but the bedding that was the problem or actually problems.
I caught my ear on the corner of a cabinet door I’d left open and it broke the skin so it was bleeding. It soon scabbed over so should be the end of the story but I’ve always been a picker off of scabs. As an adult I manage to curb my habit but I must have fallen off the wagon while asleep one night. So blood on the pillow and duvet cover. No problem soak it in cold water so the stain doesn’t set and all will be well. Except that it wasn’t and a faint stain was still there. I tried to convince myself that it wouldn’t show but it would and anyway I’d know it was there so straight into the bin and replacements ordered from M&S.
Fast forward to last Sunday when I changed the bedding. Now I only have one of everything because space is so restricted here and even an extra duvet cover would mean that the lid on the little wicker storage seat wouldn’t close. So I had two choices; either leave the bedding for another week or use the new unwashed pillow or duvet cover. I don’t know why I wasn’t happy to leave it for another week because I’m not usually that fussy but I decided I wouldn’t so stripped the bed and straight to the washing machine. Job done. Now to make the bed. I had heard that you shouldn’t use towels or bedding without washing them first but had never known why. Washing a towel and drying it seems crazy and what could go wrong with unwashed bedding. I started to find out when I was putting the duvet cover on. It kept twisting and wouldn’t go in the corners and took my simply ages to finally get it sort of OK. But wait till I disturbed it to get into bed that night! It only came about three quarters of the way up the bed and there was a big bit at the bottom that I couldn’t get the duvet into. Total disaster!!
I had to go to bed with my fleecy jogging bottoms to keep warm. I should have changed it over as soon as the others were dry but decided I could tough it out or I’d have a partial bed change in the middle of last week.
But I am soooooooooooo looking forward to a really cosy sleep tonight!

Oh and finally! Yes a few days after I binned the duvet cover I googled “how to remove blood stains” and the pillow case which had somehow escaped the bin despite having faint blood stains was able to be my guinea pig. Adding bicarbonate of soda to the cold water worked a treat almost immediately! And Mr Google also said that it might need a bit of scrubbing if it is really stubborn.
So that was an expensive lesson learnt because M&S duvet covers are not the cheapest!
