Causeway
This causeway is a Victorian iteration of the centuries-old London Road into St Ives. The children’s verse As I Was Going To St Ives would have referred to this road.
When I first moved here in 1980 it still was the main road in and out of town until a really ugly bypass was built in the 1990s (I think). I love the shape of the arches. A long term project to renovate the brickwork is mostly complete now. It’s a bit of a mishmash but it seems fitting as various repairs have used different colour bricks although the main material remains Cambridge yellow bricks, which the terrace I live in was also built with.
The arches allow flood water to drain towards the river and, unsurprisingly, last weekend’s constant rain has filled the flood fields.
In extras you can see the view behind me as I took the photo today. The river is well and truly out of its bed! I like the colour version of the mono, even though there’s a lot of brown water.
Stay warm and dry dear blippers!
