Girth

I came across this sweet chestnut tree whilst walking Merlin at Stansted Park this morning. I’d not realised they could grow so big. The trunk is extremely broad. The park formed part of an ancient hunting forest and includes areas designed by Capability Brown so it has a long history and apparently contains a number of ancient sweet chestnut trees. There’s also an arboretum which I’ve yet to explore.

A grey day which started with a frost - it was -2 degrees over night but warmed to a mild 9 degrees by the time we returned from our walk at lunchtime.
