Life through the lens...

A Yorkshire Gem.

Birthday surprise for MrC.
A visit to Wentworth Woodhouse to see the George Stubbs exhibition.
The exhibition was to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the artist.
His most famous painting was that of Whistlejacket ( top right of my collage in extras)

Stubb’s patron was the owner of Wentworth Woodhouse, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham.
When Wentworth was later remodelled by Earl Ftizwilliam  a 40ft square room was created  to showcase the painting.
Whistlejacket was only beaten four times in his racing career. Was notoriously temperamental and difficult to manage.
The one now in the room is a copy. The real painting is in the National Gallery. ( they paid 11 million pounds for it)
However we did see in at Leeds Art Gallery when it was on tour, some years ago. When we first saw, it was one of those moments you never forget. Those eyes looking straight at you. A stunning portrait, painted by someone who really understood horses.

The house is still being restored after years of neglect. Built in 1725. With work continuing over 4 decades.
300 rooms. It has the longest principal façade in the UK. 618ft.
The magnificent Marble Saloon was used as the ballroom in the film of Downtown Abbey.

It was a beautiful day. Warm with mainly sunshine. The views of the countryside with autumn tints were lovely.
We walked through the gardens to have lunch in the newly restored Camellia House Restaurant. ( see collage) A very enjoyable lunch of several small plates. All freshly cooked and delicious. I had an excellent glass of white wine from Little Wold Vineyard, East Yorkshire.
A lovely day. Will certainly visit again soon.
Such a pity it doesn’t get more publicity.

Back home and several phone calls wishing MrC Happy Birthday, followed by visits from the family bringing cards and presents.
I think he enjoyed his special day. I did!
