Suburban Lines of the LB&SCR
This magnificent tiled map survives at Victoria Station - the Brighton side!
It is the twin of the full system tiled map I blip'ed over a year ago. It amply shows how the London Brighton and South Coast Railway developed the south London suburbs as well as links to Brighton and the coast. The LB&SCR was very advanced for a British railway and introduced overhead electrification on some suburban services in 1909.
It also ran the first full Pullman train service in the UK from Victoria in 1881.
The pride of the line comes through in what is essentially both a public information device and an art work.
The tiles probably date from 1908 when the rebuilt Victoria "Brighton side" was opened in 'red-brick renaissance style'.
Sorry about the reflected lights but its almost impossible to avoid them where this is.
