Course of the Barbados Railway, Tent Bay

This one requires the eye of faith - this picture shows the old track-bed running close to the house on the left and then around the headland in the middle distance by the large rock.

The Barbados Railway was originally constructed in 1881 as a 3ft 6inch gauge railway from the capital Bridgetown to St Andrew's on the wild Atlantic east coast, to carry sugar cane to the port, and supplies to the plantations. Mr Grundy from the Great Western Railway was the first General Manager.

It was converted to 2ft 6inch in 1898. The journey from Bridgetown to St Andrews in 1910 took 4 hours for the 24 miles. The Barbados Railway closed in 1937 as a result of competition from road transport.
