Captain Cook
Today we are in Gisborne. It was a dreadful drive from Rotorua for W. The rain lashed down for the major part of the journey and we were stuck behind a very wide-load vehicle, with two pilot vehicles, for quite a way on the very twisty roads.
Still, when we arrived, the sun came out.
We chose Gisborne because of the Captain Cook connection, but also because Gisborne is the most easterly city of New Zealand to experience the sunrise first.
We had a look at Poverty Bay from Spongebay Beach and also visited the memorial which commemorates Captain Cook's arrival in Gisborne - which coincidentally, is this week in 1769. The tubing you can see on the right-hand side, is an open-air walkway being constructed from the higher ground down to the memorial grounds. It will incorporate a canoe type shape to commemorate other navigators from long ago.
We parked up along another beach road to capture the sunset. See extras.
