So farewell then,
George Brown & Sons, Engineers. I was sad to hear that they're moving out from their base on the Shore to a new development at Tranent - all much more convenient, I'm sure, but I'll miss their presence, as probably the last old-school Leith company. Apparently they started out on Ferry Road in 1828, and the George Brown who currently heads the company is 6th generation. When they first moved to this site on the Shore the swing bridge still swung open so they got ships needing repairs tying up right in front of them. Their business has since diversified from ship work, but the last few years of road closures due to tram works and now the LTN must have made things well nigh impossible for them. I hope they can flourish in Tranent!
