Tuesday: Steel Drums

Today is the beginning of Diplomatic Week which culminates in the Independence Day celebrations on Saturday.  There’s a whole bunch of stuff laid on, mostly for the diplomats who visit from other countries (there are only about 14 countries that have representative offices here, other countries cover Belize from elsewhere).  

The festivities began with a cultural evening up in Belize City.  Whilst not wishing to denigrate tonight’s festivities, the only culture on display were the steel drums.  I also had the misfortune of sitting at the table nearest to the drums which meant that all conversation had to either be mimed or conveyed through interpretative dance on account of the volume of the music.
