Beyond the end of the line
I saw that the Mid-Norfolk Railway were opening up their 'County School' station as part of the Heritage Open Days so decided to go over for a look. At present trains do not reach the station as the line ends at Dereham, but the MNR hope to be able to raise enough funds to re-open it some time in the future. In the meantime they have a cafe and small museum in the station buildings, a rather run down coach from a diesel multiple unit which is used as an extension to the cafe, and a 5 inch miniature steam railway which provides rides. There wasn't a massive amount to see but what there was was interesting, so I'm glad I went. I'm not entirely sure what this group in some sort of Civil War (?) costumes had to do with anything but they were enjoying themselves. I've added an extra from the miniature railway; although there were about three steam engines running I rather liked the look of the passengers on this diesel.
I had an unusual experience wandering down the platform at one point. A chap approached me and said "Are you John? John H.....?" Clearly I was, and it turned out he was somebody who I had interviewed and given a job to in Milton Keynes not long before I retired. I must have interviewed well over a thousand people for jobs during my career and had a few hundred actually working in my teams but I did vaguely remember him; a nice guy, as I recall. Seems he is still working at the same place in Milton Keynes but as he now works from home after the pandemic he decided to move to Norfolk. Small world!
