Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Yesterday, we had found quite a cache of bin-side goodies (Extra) but this morning there was only one thing left. The system is working well!

I left my favourite scarf at the pub yesterday. Today, I had to go down and get it. Fortunately, I could get a tram part of the way - they come every few minutes, so they're great. I had thought of bringing Archie and maybe walking through to the Shore again, but the buses and trams are SO crowded, it's no fun for him. It's not even much fun for me.

I was on one of the new electric buses both ways, and on the way back I had a good chat about it with the woman sitting next to me. Several complaints and design faults spotted. One obvious mistake is that the gubbings (presumably) take up a huge amount - at least four, possibly six fewer seats. A solid bar across where the wheelchair goes, means that it's awkward for, say, a double pram to manoeuvre in and out. And one whole side of the bus has seats up a very large step. Awkward for, say, older people. But it has got pretty new graphics and maps and someone constantly telling us what the next stop is.

On the tram back up the road, a man sat beside me. He wore bright red tartan trousers. He was black, so I assumed he wasn't Scottish. I admired his trousers. He took this as a signal for a chat... 'Have you just been to church?' He had. When he heard that I had not, he proceeded to try to persuade me to try it.

I got off at the next stop...
