Ferns, friends and pizza.
Tim and I were attending a meeting of the British Pteridological Society today at Glasgow Botanics, so had to leave the house at 7.30 this morning to arrive soon after 10am. We had a great day, with a tour of all the glasshouses pointing out all the million and one ferns and tree ferns! One of the back-up houses is home to a terrapin, who was trying to get out while we were there. Stevie, the man in charge, takes him out every day for a walk! My extra today.
We had a lovely pizza lunch, then followed a talk about Ferns and geology, which was very interesting, then a very detailed talk about the identification of eight different species of horsetail, which I'm afraid bored me rigid! I've spent most of my working life trying to find out how to kill them, so while everyone else was inspecting them through hand lenses I was trying to look interested!
Great to meet old friends and make new ones - and came away with a bag of cuttings and fern fronds!
Quote of the Day: 'Only spread a fern-frond over a man's head and worldly cares are cast out, and freedom and beauty and peace come in.' - John Muir.
