The Pensioner

One Love

I’d a pal round. At the house! Old Paulie, work colleague still in harness but now 64. We had some laughs together so we did but it’s now been 15 years since I got my escape papers and a few years since I’ve seen him. We hit it off like it was just yesterday, mind.
Then I was off up town. Tis 150 years since the founding of the famous, indeed glorious, Heart of Midlothian Football Club (FC for short). And one of their specially curated events was a procession with pipe band along the “maroon mile” (ie a walk from Haymarket to Tynecastle). The great and the good were all there. Gary Mackay. Legend. Councillor Eric Milligan. Less so. And special guests - over a thousand fans from Leyton Orient, a club whose first team also signed up en masse at the start of WW1. Poor laddies.
And then we played football together! Spoiler alert: LO are a cut above Scotland’s "third best side"….
