Over Yonder

Just George

My Dear Princess and Dear Fellow,

Today (Friday) was a public holiday on account of Matariki which is sort of the Māori new year.

It has kind of thrown me and Caro off. It feels like Saturday.

So tomorrow I will get a BONUS Saturday.

I am down with this.

As for today's title, I asked Caro about the funeral home today and if she was concerned about ghosts.

Funnily enough this is the first time we have ever discussed this subject.

You may recall that - back in the day - Caro had an unpleasant experience with a spirit from Edinburgh's Old Town.

But she seems sanguine about working with the recently departed and in fact revealed that the funeral home has a resident ghost named "George".

She says all the employees acknowledge him. When anything unexplained happens they say, "Oh it's just George".

I like that. It contains affection and acceptance.

I feel like I'm learning a lot from Caro's new job. Just about living with death. Or if that does not sound paradoxical enough, about existing alongside non-existence.

This job of hers has definitely become more than just a job. Even for me.

S.
