Day 16

Much cooler, much cloudier - and at this height the clouds come down to meet us. No major excursions, just a walk up to the boulangerie in the morning, then a late afternoon wander around parts of the town we hadn't explored before. We were looking for the funicular - established in the 1930s but now no longer operating, though a group seems to be trying to raise support to restore it. We did find it, though those photos have been relegated to extras as I liked the mural we found at the end of a military building at the top end of the town, alongside the river. It illustrates the links between the pastoralists, the military and the town - the thermal springs were useful for treating wounded soldiers so the army played a large part in the initial building of the town, before it became a fashionable resort. The dog is from the traditional herd-guarding breed, the sort we came across several times in the Vallée d'Ossau, luckily without incident!!
