Grumpy Old Man

Orchids and weeds

A dull start, getting better as the day went on, but never as good as yesterday, though now, after dinner, the sun is out again and the sky is wonderful!

Did some weeding this morning, from the top of a ladder! The only way to weed parts of the steep bank, but there are many places I still can't reach. Mostly pulling out broad-leaved willowherb as it's spreading widely by seed, but also New Zealand willowherb, which is a tiny, low-growing creeping plant.

After lunch I went down town for a doc's appointment and then some shopping. As always in warm weather it's a struggle walking back up the hill, though I did stop for a chat with neighbours!

My Blip today is of a dozen plants of Northern Marsh Orchid, Dactylorhiza purpurella, all seedlings which have come up in pots of other plants. They must have originated in Arduaine, as there are none of that species near here. I'll have to find somewhere good to plant them out!
