Between fen and mountains

Saint Michel de Cuixa

Today, we did a shorter walk than usual as I had something on in the afternoon. We walked along the irrigation canal to the abbey and then crossed to the other side of the valley and walked along the ridge back to our starting point. We admired the siphon which takes water from high up on one side of the valley to a lower point on the other side through an underground pipe several hundred metres long. It works on the same principle as siphoning petrol out of a car from a higher points to a lower point. It is a simple but impressive piece of engineering. We had our sandwiches at the end of the walk in the pretty village of Codalet, 319 metres of ascent and seven and a half kilometres in all.
