The Hudson Way.

Tuesday 11th June.

Walked along The Hudson Way this morning.
(Or rather part of it.)
The route follows the old disused railway from Beverley to Market Weighton. 10 miles.
Built by railway engineer George Hudson and opened in 1865.
Closed by Mr Beeching in 1965.

We passed St Helen’s Well on the way.
It flows from a natural spring. Once used to fill the steam trains which passed nearby.
St Helen Flavia Lucila Helena ( AD 248 - 329) was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great who was declared Emperor of York in 306AD.
The first Roman Emperor to become a Christian.
In recent years locals & visitors have taken to trying ribbons etc round the well for good health and good luck.

The old signal box is at Kiplingcotes station.
Now used as an artist studio.
A very enjoyable walk. Still a cool breeze but dry and some sunshine.

We spent the rest of the day in Beverley. Such a delightful market town.
Visited the Minster and also St Mary’s Church.
Finishing with a visit to Roberts and Speight, one of our favourite wine shops.
Bought some from vineyards which we have visited in both France and South Africa.
Looked forward to drinking them later. They always bring back happy memories.

We have been lucky again with the weather, and managed to miss the showers.
