The Rialto

Today’s jaunt took us first to the Canareggio district to wander around what was the Jewish Ghetto where, in the 1500s the local Jewish population were forced to live and locked in under guard at night, only allowed to work in the rest of the city during the day.

In extras are two things I found particularly moving: a poem that is part of a wall memorial in one of the squares to local people killed in the holocaust; the second is one of many brass plaques on the pavements at entries to houses listing the names of people taken away to death camps, when they were taken and when killed.

Afterwards, we took the vaporetto along the Grand Canal where I took the inevitable main blip of the Rialto bridge, the extra of the sunlight twinkling on gondolas and, later while wandering around, the classic view from the Accaddemia Bridge
